Programs

The design and evaluation specialization of the MS program prepares students to assume professional positions in instructional design and/or evaluation. All MS students will be required to complete at least 12 credit hours each year to remain enrolled in the program (prior to completing project coursework).

Instructional Psychology & Technology (PhD)

We strongly recommend that you have an MS degree in IP&T or related field prior to applying for the PhD program. If you currently do not have an MS degree, we encourage you to first apply for the MS program and then apply for the PhD towards the end of your MS degree. Those with MS degrees in IP&T are much more competitive for advanced study. Starting as an MS student will not slow down your progress because all the core coursework required for the MS is also required for the PhD. Up to 36 credits (of the total 39) can be applied from our MS program to the PhD requirements. (We can also accept up to 36 credits from a comparable graduate program under the discretion of the department chair.)

Marriage & Family Therapy (MS)

The marriage and family therapy program offers the Master of Science degree as a two-year program. The purpose of this degree is to prepare graduate students to engage in marriage and family therapy practice in the areas of: (a) theoretical competence, (b) clinical competence, and (c) research competence, with an understanding of multicultural diversity. More specifically, at the end of their program students will (a) be able to pass the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards (AMFTRB) National Licensing Exam, (b) be effective clinicians and employable as interns, and (c) be able to meet the academic and clinical requirements for the associate/intern MFT license in Utah. Our intent is to prepare the students to function in a wide variety of MFT settings. The curriculum is based on state licensure/certification requirements and is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.

Marriage & Family Therapy (PhD)

The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and has three interrelated emphases: Clinical Practice, Teaching and Clinic Supervision, and Research. The PhD program offers two tracks: 1) Academic/Research and 2) Clinical Administration/Private Practice. Electives are offered within each of these categories to help students meet their individual goals. These emphases will be facilitated and directed within an environment of understanding and respect for multicultural diversity.

Marriage, Family, & Human Development (MS)

The MS degree in MFHD provides students with a broad-based understanding in family sciences and human development. For some the MS is a terminal graduate degree that enhances professional opportunities. For other students this degree is designed to prepare them for doctoral study.

Marriage, Family, & Human Development (PhD)

The graduate program is designed to address the theories, research, and practices that (1) strengthen marriages, (2) enhance the development of children, and (3) unfold the characteristics of quality nurturing relationships across generations.

The PhD degree in MFHD provides integrated and in-depth learning experiences in family studies and human development. It also offers the opportunity to acquire expertise in a number of different aspects of the field. The primary focus of doctoral study is to help students become effective educators and scholars. Many graduates find professional positions in university departments related to family studies or human development. Some find positions in community settings, research organizations, or the mass media; and others choose to work in business settings.

School Psychology (EdS)

The EdS degree in school psychology prepares students to pursue credentialing as school psychologists in Pre-K – 12 educational settings and is approved by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) through December 2026. Knowledge and competency areas include data-based decision-making, consultation and collaboration with teachers and parents, academic interventions and instructional supports, mental and behavioral health services and interventions, school-wide practices to support learning, services to promote safe and supportive schools, family-school-community collaboration, equitable practices for diverse populations, research and evidence-based practice, and legal, ethical and professional practice.

Sociology (MS)

Sociology Fundamentals and Specialization
Graduates will have a broad understanding of sociology as a discipline and a deeper understanding of at least one substantive area within sociology.
