Graduation

Congratulations! This is an exciting time, and we are looking forward to celebrating your accomplishments during your studies at BYU. Preparing for graduation can be an involved process, so please visit this page frequently to make sure you are meeting deadlines and are getting ready to make the most of your graduation day.

How to Apply for Graduation

Before starting your application for graduation, please review your Graduate Progress Report. You are the person most responsible for your degree, and our hope is that the Progress Report will either verify that you are right on track or guide you to problems that need to be solved before you will be able to graduate.

The graduation application is online in AIM. You can access the application here, or by logging in to myBYU > click on School > click on Apply for Graduation.

The application will appear and you should read it carefully. Do the following:

  1. Make sure you have an active ecclesiastical endorsement on file. You must have an endorsement to be eligible to apply for graduation.
  2. Click on the link to review your Graduate Progress Report and make sure it is correct, including the names of faculty members on your graduate committee.
  3. Type in your name exactly the way you would like it to appear on your diploma(s) including periods and any other needed punctuation such as accents.
  4. Indicate whether or not you plan to attend graduation.
  5. Click ‘Submit Application’ link.

If you need to change your graduation semester, contact the graduate program manager in your department. If you don’t meet all the graduation requirements you will be withdrawn from graduation and will have to reapply for a different semester.

Graduation FAQ

If your questions aren't answered below, consult the questions at https://enrollment.byu.edu/registrar/graduation-faqs before contacting our office.

  • If the graduation period is August, your application will be withdrawn and you will need to reapply in GRADAPP. If you miss the deadlines for fall, winter, or spring graduations, your application will be deferred until the next semester.

  • April, June, or August graduates all walk at the commencement ceremonies in April, but students planning to graduate in June or August must meet deadlines for the April graduation ceremonies.

  • You must receive an acceptable grade on all required courses. It will need to be taken again the following semester or replaced by another course.

  • You must register for at least 2 hours (1 hours for June graduates) and will graduate the following semester.

Caps & Gowns

Each student that participates in commencement and convocation during graduation must wear the appropriate cap and gown. Order yours through BYU Alumni. They have specific information about when to order and pick-up your purchases. They also have videos with instructions on how to wear hoods, caps, and gowns.

Cap and gown purchasing prices range from $59.99 to $99.99 and include a tassel that should be worn on the front-left side of your cap.
