    Applicants with Foreign Credentials
    Applicants with foreign credentials must complete a foreign credential evaluation BEFORE the application deadline in order for their application to be considered complete. We recommend using IERF and that you request to have the official evaluation report sent electronically to BYU Graduate Studies. Please plan accordingly as this process may take 6 weeks or longer to complete.
    Program Requirements
    The master’s degree prepares students for two career paths: (1) doctoral work beyond the master’s degree and (2) professional careers at the master’s level as teachers and researchers.

    Requirements for Degree.
    • Credit hours (minimum 35): 29 course hours, including at least 23 hours of formal course work in sociology, plus 6 hours of thesis credits (Soc 699R). Only course work with a grade of B– or better is acceptable.
    • Required courses: Soc 600604605610; and for first-year graduate students 598R in fall and winter; minimum 15 additional hours of graduate sociology course work; demonstration of competence in sociological theory, research methods, and statistics.
    • Thesis.
    • Examination: oral defense of thesis.
    Program Outcomes
    Sociology Fundamentals and Specialization
    Graduates will understand the sociological discipline and a deeper comprehension of at least one substantive area within sociology.

    Graduates will understand and apply key sociological theories to empirical and disciplinary questions.

    Graduates will be able to present original sociological research for a scholarly audience, both orally and in writing.

    Research Design and Reporting
    Graduates will be able to design and conduct sociological research.
