This degree integrates advanced knowledge in biology with research in teaching and learning. Students will have the opportunity to design a program of study and a research project that meets their individual goals. Research topics tend to focus on in-depth studies of inquiry teaching practices, tests of learning theory, and evaluation of various forms of science pedagogy.

The primary goal of the MS Biology program is to provide advanced training and experience in ecology, evolutionary biology, and bioinformatics. Students will address contemporary biological problems relying upon current theory and a variety of research tools. The program features an exciting range of subdisciplines, including evolutionary ecology, human-disease biology, systematics and phylogenetics, organismal and population biology, community and ecosystem ecology, and conservation biology. Many students find this training ideal for competitive job placement upon completing their degree.

An MS in Microbiology and Molecular Biology prepares the students for a wide variety of employment experiences in the industry. Employment opportunities in research may also be available to qualified MS graduates. Typically starting salaries are slightly higher than those for BS graduates. The MS degree is designed to give the student a solid foundation in Microbiology and Molecular Biology principles and a strong research experience.
