The Department of Exercise Sciences values the human being as sacred and seeks to strengthen both body and spirit by attaining, advancing, and disseminating knowledge in the disciplines of human exercise and performance, injury and rehabilitation, and wellness while inviting divine inspiration to guide our efforts.
This degree integrates advanced knowledge in biology with research in teaching and learning. Students will have the opportunity to design a program of study and a research project that meets their individual goals. Research topics tend to focus on in-depth studies of inquiry teaching practices, tests of learning theory, and evaluation of various forms of science pedagogy.
The primary goal of the MS Biology program is to provide advanced training and experience in ecology, evolutionary biology, and bioinformatics. Students will address contemporary biological problems relying upon current theory and a variety of research tools. The program features an exciting range of subdisciplines, including evolutionary ecology, human-disease biology, systematics and phylogenetics, organismal and population biology, community and ecosystem ecology, and conservation biology. Many students find this training ideal for competitive job placement upon completing their degree.

An MS in Microbiology and Molecular Biology prepares the students for a wide variety of employment experiences in the industry. Employment opportunities in research may also be available to qualified MS graduates. Typically starting salaries are slightly higher than those for BS graduates. The MS degree is designed to give the student a solid foundation in Microbiology and Molecular Biology principles and a strong research experience.
A PhD in Microbiology and Molecular Biology indicates that the graduate is capable of and qualified to conduct independent and original research in the Microbiology and Molecular Biology industries and other related fields. Employees with PhD degrees are in high demand by industry, with starting salaries that are considerably higher than for BS or MS graduates. Also, a PhD degree is generally required to pursue an academic career. The doctoral program is designed to prepare the student for a lifetime of intellectual inquiry and research and is, therefore, more rigorous and demanding than the MS program.
