Separation Methods of Analysis

Hours

2.0 Credit, 2 Lecture, 0 Lab

Outcome 1

Understand the fundamental thermodynamics behind the various separations methods.

Outcome 2

Describe the operating principles of the various column and channel separation techniques, including gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, supercritical fluid chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, capillary electrochromatography, field flow fractionation, and microfluidic separations.

Outcome 3

Select the appropriate column or channel, its configuration and composition for a given separation problem, including open-tubular, packed, monolithic, and microfluidic.

Outcome 4

Describe the instrumentation required for the various separation techniques and their associated operating principles.

Outcome 5

Select the operating conditions (mobile phase, temperature, flow rate, program rate, etc.) for the various separation techniques.

Outcome 6

Write a critical review of a research paper reporting the use of any column or channel separation technique.

Outcome 7

Understand the significance, quality, and limitations of the results produced by the various separation techniques.

Outcome 8

Evaluate data and properly determine their meaning to make correct and ethical decisions.
