Doctoral Programs College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences College of Life Sciences
The primary goal of the doctoral program in the Biology Department is to provide advanced training and experience in ecology, evolutionary biology, bioinformatics, and biology teaching. The program features an exciting range of subdisciplines, including evolutionary ecology, human-disease biology, systematics and phylogenetics, organismal and population biology, community and ecosystem ecology, and conservation biology. We emphasize original and creative research and teaching that prepares students for careers in academics, and leadership positions in government or industrial settings.

This program prepares students for leadership at the highest level of their profession. Most students become university or college faculty. Students are prepared in the scientific bases of exercise science, well acquainted with the scientific literature, able to teach college courses, and able to do independent research.

The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and has three interrelated emphases: Clinical Practice, Teaching and Clinic Supervision, and Research. The PhD program offers two tracks: 1) Academic/Research and 2) Clinical Administration/Private Practice. Electives are offered within each of these categories to help students meet their individual goals. These emphases will be facilitated and directed within an environment of understanding and respect for multicultural diversity.

The graduate program is designed to address the theories, research, and practices that (1) strengthen marriages, (2) enhance the development of children, and (3) unfold the characteristics of quality nurturing relationships across generations.

The PhD degree in MFHD provides integrated and in-depth learning experiences in family studies and human development. It also offers the opportunity to acquire expertise in a number of different aspects of the field. The primary focus of doctoral study is to help students become effective educators and scholars. Many graduates find professional positions in university departments related to family studies or human development. Some find positions in community settings, research organizations, or the mass media; and others choose to work in business settings.

A PhD in Microbiology and Molecular Biology indicates that the graduate is capable of and qualified to conduct independent and original research in the Microbiology and Molecular Biology industries and other related fields. Employees with PhD degrees are in high demand by industry, with starting salaries that are considerably higher than for BS or MS graduates. Also, a PhD degree is generally required to pursue an academic career. The doctoral program is designed to prepare the student for a lifetime of intellectual inquiry and research and is, therefore, more rigorous and demanding than the MS program.
