The purpose of the PhD program in the Department of Mechanical Engineering is to provide a world-class education to doctoral students, in an atmosphere enlightened by the principles of the gospel.

A PhD in Microbiology and Molecular Biology indicates that the graduate is capable of and qualified to conduct independent and original research in the Microbiology and Molecular Biology industries and other related fields. Employees with PhD degrees are in high demand by industry, with starting salaries that are considerably higher than for BS or MS graduates. Also, a PhD degree is generally required to pursue an academic career. The doctoral program is designed to prepare the student for a lifetime of intellectual inquiry and research and is, therefore, more rigorous and demanding than the MS program.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers a doctoral degree in Physics and Astronomy. Physics and Astronomy PhD students take graduate-level courses in astronomy, astrophysics or other related topics and perform original research culminating in a written dissertation. Tuition, insurance and stipend are typically provided to each student for 4 – 5 years. See https://physics.byu.edu/graduate/ for more details.

The application deadline for full consideration in the program is January 15 of each year. Applications may be submitted past this deadline but will only be reviewed after the review of on-time applications have been completed.
