Family Theory Construction

Introduction to family theories and applied experience in theory construction and analysis focusing on familial processes and human development.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  1. Identify assumptions and propositions of theories about families, close relationships, and human development.
  2. Understand the ways theory is critical in enriching our understanding of key content areas in human development and family studies.
  3. Understand the processes of theory contruction and testing.
  4. Understand the relation between theory and research.
  5. Apply theories to social and interpersonal issues.
  6. Examine the adequacy of theories in helping to develop knowledge about families, human development, and close relationships.
  7. Develop abilities to critique and evaluate theory.
  8. Be able to review journal articles with an eye toward determining whether a particular theory has been accurately described, used appropriately to guide the study, and reasonably employed to help interpret the results.
