Exercise testing and interpretation. Exercise prescription for healthy children and adults, athletes, and various clinical and special populations.

Legal Issues Related to Exercise Testing

Understand basic legal issues associated with exercise testing.

Pre-Exercise Screenings

Select or create and administer an appropriate preparticipation screening questionnaire. Identify significant risk factors and signs or symptoms suggestive of underlying disease. Correctly measure blood pressure at rest and during exercise. Make preliminary assessments of BMI, WH ratio, and body composition. Initially categorize an individual into one of the ACSM's or AHA's risk stratifications. Based on the pre-exercise screening, make the necessary initial decisions pertaining to exercise, exercise testing, and preparticipation medical exams.

Perform an Exercise Test.

Select an appropriate submaximal or maximal exercise test to estimate aerobic fitness. Know the normal cardiovascular and metabolic responses to exercise. Interpret the VO2, HR, RER, RPE, VE, VT, and RR responses to an exercise test. Administer an exercise test on a cycle ergometer to estimate lactate threshold using the ventilatory responses to exercise.

Writing an Exercise Prescription.

Understand the eight principles of training and use them to develop an appropriate exercise recommendation for individuals who are low risk, obese, diabetic, elderly, pregnant, or have suspected or known underlying cardiovascular disease.
