Nature and content of contemporary mass communication theory.

Theory and Critical Thinking

Students will learn a broad spectrum of communication theories and help them develop critical thinking skills about the communications industry. By the end of the semester, students should be able to understand communication research and see how theories help to explain the world around them.

Analysis of Media Theory

Students will analyze the main frameworks of media theory, including structural, behavioral and cultural traditions of analysis.

Application of Media Theories

Students will understand and apply theories about media organizations, media content, audiences or publics, and media effects.

Thesis

Students will identify an interesting theoretical area as a basis for your thesis or project and write a literature review on that topic.

Comprehensive Exams

Students will demonstrate a grasp of communication theories and prepare them for future comprehensive examinations.

Media Consumers

Students will appreciate media research and become critical media consumers.
