Overview of fiction and nonfiction literature for elementary and secondary school students (K-12); authors, current trends, and cross-curriculum classroom applications.

Genre

Candidates will demonstrate a knowledge of the literary genre and the wide range of children's books available in each area.

Evaluation

Candidates will demonstrate ability in assessing the qualities of children's books in terms of the following evaluative criteria in literary/artistic merit, interest to children, use in the curriculum, and censorship

Creative Process

Candidates will show insight into the creative process experienced by writers and illustrators of children's books.

Reading Instruction

Candidates will understand affective reading instruction--ways to utilize children's literature to improve reading instruction.

Integration

Candidates will be able to integrate children's literature across the curriculum.

Tools for Evaluation

Candidates will show familiarity with the major evaluative tools available for assessing children's literature--both retrospective and current review sources.
