Graduate Program Manager

Role

A graduate program manager works under the direction of the graduate coordinator to handle many of the procedural matters concerning students’ graduate programs. The graduate program manager is actively involved in tracking a student’s progress from the moment that an application arrives until the student graduates. Graduate program managers are often responsible for maintaining files for graduate applicants and students and for dispersing reports sent to the department by Graduate Studies. Graduate program managers may also be required to respond to students’ questions about the application to their respective graduate program, and about policies and procedures once the students are accepted into a program.

Deferments vs. Forms vs. Petitions

Program managers request deferments on the student's behalf.

Admission deferment options—medical, military, mission, and visa—allow students to defer the start of their program for a period of one semester to one year. These deferments may be renewed for a second year upon request and approval. After two years of deferment, students will be reassessed to determine eligibility to start their program. In most cases, students who request to exceed the two-year deferment limit will be advised to reapply for admission. Matriculated students are unable to request a deferment but may apply for a leave of absence (refer to the Leave of Absence policy).
