Adv Ex Phys: Skeletal Muscle

Hours

3.0 Credit, 3 Lecture, 0 Lab

Prerequisites

Effects of acute and chronic exercise on anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry of skeletal muscle.

Muscle Anatomy and Structure

Understand muscle anatomy and structure from a cellular to whole-muscle level and relate these characteristics to whole-muscle function.

Excitation-Contraction Coupling Process

Be able to explain the excitation-contraction coupling process.

Muscle Contraction

Understand the history, theory and mechanisms of muscle contraction at the level of the sarcomere, and how variations in contractile proteins may influence this process.

Muscle Adaptation

Describe the whole-muscle adaptations that occur in response to mechanical overload and the cellular mechanisms that account for these adaptations.

Muscle Soreness, Damage, and Repair

Be able to provide a detailed explanation of causes, concepts and theories associated with muscle soreness, damage and repair.

Muscle Inactivity and Unloading

Describe the whole-muscle adaptations that occur in response to inactivity and unloading and the cellular mechanisms that account for these adaptations.
