Developmental Psychopathology

Prerequisites

Advanced study of etiology, diagnosis, prevalence, associated features, and theories of psychological and developmental disorders in children and adolescents.

1. Symptoms and features of childhood disorders

Students will recognize and describe the symptoms and features typically associated with common childhood emotional and behavioral disorders, as well as identify the historical perspectives, diagnostic issues, epidemiology, and developmental pathways of various forms of child and adolescent psychopathology.

Measurement: Multiple choice, short-answer, and fill-in-the-blank style quizzes and exams.

2. Identify biological, psychological, and socio-cultural variables

Students will identify and give examples of the biological, psychological, and socio-cultural variables typically associated with the development and maintenance of childhood disorders, including major risk and protective processes.

Measurement: Multiple choice, short-answer, fill-in-the-blank and short essay quizzes and exams.

3. Diagnostic formulation from vignettes

Students will analyze clinical case vignettes, articulate the most appropriate diagnostic formulation of the case, provide a rationale for diagnostic decisions, and assess what additional information would be important in arriving at a more complete case formulation.

Measurement: Short answer and essay exams.
