Adv Internal Combustion Engine

Hours

3.0 Credit, 3 Lecture, 0 Lab
Detailed combustion analysis of compression and spark ignition engines. Modeling concepts from zero to multidimensional. Engine heat transfer and I.C. engine diagnostics.

Terminology

1. Understand the engineering terminology and calculations that describe engine performance and emissions. Be able to perform calculations to describe these parameters.

Current combustion process in IC engines

2. Understand the combustion processes of current spark ignition and compression ignition engines. Be able to calculate heat release rates from pressure data and identify cycle processes from in-cylinder pressure data.

IC engine measurements

3. Collect and measure performance parameters on spark ignition and compression ignition engines.

Zero Dimensional Model

4. Develop a zero-dimensional model of an internal combustion engine involving variable specific heats, variable heat release, heat transfer, the complete in-cylinder cycle.

3-D Model

5. Learn to utilize a 3-D model of an internal combustion engine including the intake and exhaust process, in-cylinder fluid motion, combustion, and spray dynamics.

Kinetic Mechanism

6. Produce a kinetic mechanism and utilize the mechanism in a combustion model

Literature Review and Recent Developments

7. Read literature and critically review technical information related to new developments in internal combustion engines.
