2.0 Credit, 2.0 Lecture, 0 Lab
Learn how to handle legal issues common to the elderly: estate planning and medical directives; consumer fraud; public benefits such as Medicaid, Medicare, social security; nursing homes; property issues; and elder abuse. Students will meet with elderly clients on a weekly basis at local senior citizen centers. Students will have the opportunity to draft simple wills, medical directives, and deeds in behalf of actual clients.

Counseling Skills

Students will understand basic interviewing and counseling skills and apply their skills by interviewing and counseling with clients at the senior centers.

Client Education

Students will learn how to educate clients about the advantages and disadvantages of each basic type of estate planning tool.

Client Wills

Students will be able to prepare and execute a basic will on behalf of a client.

Senior Issues

Students will understand common Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security issues faced by seniors.

Exploitation of Seniors

Students will identify the ways in which seniors are exploited in consumer issues and students will learn how to educate seniors on how to protect themselves.

Advising Seniors

Students will learn how to advise seniors on common issues including property issues, nursing home issues, guardian and conservatorships and elder abuse.

Letters of Advice

Students will write letters of advice to clients under the direction of an attorney.

Documentation

Students will learn the importance of documenting work with clients and following through on paperwork through the closing of a case.
