Domestic Violence Intervention

2.0 Credit, 2.0 Lecture, 0 Lab
Learn about the dynamics involved within abusive families and how those dynamics play out in court. Learn how domestic violence is treated in each context that might be brought to court: criminal actions, protective and restraining orders, personal injury cases, custody and divorce actions and within the juvenile court system. Students will have the opportunity to work with real cases through the Family Justice center on Tuesday evenings from 5:00-9:00 p.m. Students do not need to be available every Tuesday or for the full range of hours.

Dynamics of Violence

Students will understand the dynamics prevalent in violent relationships.

Types of Court Proceedings

Students will understand how domestic violence issues are treated in each type of court proceeding:  criminal prosecutions, family law cases, protective orders, personal injury cases and in the juvenile court system.

Domestic Violence Laws

Students will compare domestic violence laws and protocols in another geographic region to the Utah laws and protocols we study in class.

Practical Application

Students will apply the concepts taught in class by interviewing and advising participants under the direction of an attorney at the Family Justice Center clinic.
