Students will learn different types of computerized measurement and assessment methods and item forms, including their development, delivery, and statistical theory.

Expected Learning Outcomes for IP&T 654: Computerized Testing

1. Given the purpose of a test and a description of the target population of examinees and the constraints

involved in a particular testing context, students will be able to present a defensible recommendation as to whether an adaptive or nonadaptive system would likely be most appropriate in that situation, and develop a plan for implementing the recommended system.

2. Students will be able to evaluate existing computer-based testing systems and present evidence-based recommendations for improving the systems.

3. Students will demonstrate understanding of the problems and issues associated with the use of computer-adaptive tests including (a) constructing and calibrating items; (b) developing and maintaining item banks; (c) implementing algorithms for selecting items, scoring responses, estimating the ability of each examinee, and terminating the adaptive process; and (d) procedures for reporting the results for individual examinees.

4. Students will use existing software to demonstrate the role of simulation in developing and evaluating the algorithms and criteria proposed for use in a computer-adaptive testing system.
