Hours

2.0 Credit, 1 Lecture, 2 Lab

Semester

Fall
Basic techniques and procedures used in human performance laboratories.

Accuracy and Precision

Develop an appreciation of the terms accuracy, precision, and measurement error.

Cardiovascular Response to Exercise

Understand the biophysics behind cardiovascular measurements such as heart rate, EKG, and noninvasive arterial blood pressure monitoring.

Demonstrate proficiency in the measurement of HR, EKG, and blood pressure during exercise.

Metabolic Response to Exercise

Understand the exercise testing procedures for evaluating the metabolic responses to aerobic and anaerobic exercise.

Understand metabolic calculations used for measuring oxygen consumption and energy expenditure.

Become proficient in the operation of a metabolic measurement system used for direct measurement of energy expenditure.

Demonstrate proficiency in measuring blood lactate levels and estimating lactate threshold during exercise.

Body Composition

Understand the role of anthropometry in evaluating body composition in humans.

Demonstrate proficiency in measuring body composition using anthropometric (skin-fold thickness) and body-density (BodPod) techniques.

Skeletal Muscle Structure and Function

Understand the principles behind fiber typing human skeletal muscle.

Demonstrate proficiency in basic muscle biochemistry techniques used in fiber typing human skeletal muscle.

Understand how to evaluate muscle function from measurements of muscle force production and EMG activity.

Demonstrate proficiency in monitoring muscle EMG and how to convert the raw EMG into a signal appropriate for evaluation.
