Evolution of American law and its application to American educational systems. Fundamental sources and principles of the law, the judicial structure, language policy issues, and key court cases affecting education at the state and federal levels.

Understand Constitutional and Civil Rights Heritage

Students will explore the development of Constitutional Law, especially as it affects issues of Church and State in public education and will learn the rights and duties between educators and individuals and parents under basic civil rights statutes, and the IDEIA, ADA, Sec 504, the Equal Educational Opportunities Act, and other statutory sources of duties such as FERPA, NCLB and others. (aligns with program learning outcomes 1D, 2B, 4B, 4E, 4G)

Educational Law

Know and understand educational law and surrounding issues in order to promote practices that afford learners an equitable education and accord all faculty and staff their constitutional rights. (Aligns with program learning outcome 1D, 2B, 3E, 4B, 4E, 4G)

Language Learners

Students will gain a beginning perspective on duties and rights involved with serving language minority students, and racial and ethnic minority students. (Aligns with program learning outcomes 1J, 2B, 4B, 4E, 4G)
