Understanding the physical roots of the electromagnetic properties of materials. Review of quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics, and relating these principles to electrical and magnetic properties. Students will gain an understanding of the great variation in the types of behaviors associated with materials, as well as a foundation for measurement of material characteristics.
