Qualitative Research Methods

Major methods of qualitative research used in communications studies.

Conducting Scientific Research

Students will be able to use appropriate qualitative research methods to answer relevant questions.  They will be able to explain the difference between qualitative and quantitative research and identify how they complement each other and identify when one might be more appropriate than another.   

Students will be able to identify and compare different methodological approaches to qualitative research.   

Students will be able to identify and explicate appropriate procedures for increasing the trustworthiness and rigor of qualitative methods.  

Students will be able to demonstrate skills in interpreting qualitative data.  

Students will be able to identify ethical issues related to the use of qualitative methods.

Developing Scholar/Disciples

Students will be scholars of the mass communications process.

Understanding the Role of Media and Society

Students will be able to think critically about the relationship bewteen mass media and society.

Communicating Effectively

Students will be able to demonstrate skills in writing qualitative research in clear, easy to understand prose.

Students will be able to demonstrate skills for interviewing and facilitating group interviews.  

Students will be able to demonstrate skills in preparing field notes and research logs.
