Maintenance and expression of genetic information, the role of nucleic acids in biology at the chemical and structural level, and methods to study and control nucleic acid function as a means of solving biological problems.

Describe how genetic information is stably maintained, how it is expressed, and how that expression is regulated, with an emphasis on the mechanism by which molecular machines perform these processes.

Understand methods for studying the structure and function of nucleic acids and methods for manipulating gene expression in living systems.

Interpret and critique data obtained using these methods as reported in the primary scientific literature.

Communicate this understanding in both oral and written formats. [

Design appropriate experiments and apply the techniques of nucleic acid biochemistry to their own research problems.
