Eight Things Graduate Students Should Know About the UAC

1. The UAC is a disability services office geared toward ensuring equal access to programs, academics, and experiences at BYU for all students with disabilities.

2. Primarily, the UAC is responsible for determining what academic accommodations may be available to students with a disability.  Any BYU student can set up an appointment to meet with a UAC coordinator.  Documentation of disability is required in order to receive academic accommodations.  Once accommodations are determined, students may request accommodation letters from the UAC, and then they (the student) determine which of their professors will receive the accommodations letters.

3. Determining whether or not to disclose a disability, use academic accommodations, or talk with someone about your situation can be frightening.  Our office is COMPLETELY confidential (unless a student is in grave danger).  You will be able to control which, if any, of your professors learn that you have a disability. Information regarding academic accommodations does not appear on academic transcripts.

4. If you are unsure whether or not you have a disability, the UAC can either assist you in determining that or refer you to a place where those questions can be resolved.

5. The UAC may have other services that might be helpful to you including: The Accessibility Lab, ADHD/learning disorder evaluations, assistive technology, interpreters, scholarships, temporary medical accommodations, transcriptionists.

6. The UAC can assist individuals who may need maps or lists with information regarding accessible restrooms or accessible entrances or ramps.  The UAC can also provide information regarding disability parking passes.

7. The UAC REACH program is intended to help students with disabilities transition to the workforce.  The program can assist in all areas related to interview preparation, disclosure with employers, attaining internships, etc.
