He Loves Us
Submitter Statement:
During my graduate studies at BYU, I had the privilege of working with exceptional teachers and mentors, most notably William Whittaker. His background as an art director, including his work for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, deeply influenced me. Witnessing his ability and impact as an artist inspired me to pursue similar work, particularly creating paintings that could positively influence people for good.
Early in my career, I presented my portfolio to art directors at Church offices and was commissioned to create illustrations for their magazines, continuing this work periodically. A pivotal moment came in 1983 when I was commissioned to paint three portraits of the Savior: "Washing the Apostles’ Feet," "Knocking on the Door," and "Jesus the Christ." This opportunity shifted the focus of my work from Western subjects for art galleries to more inspirational pieces centered on the life and mission of Jesus Christ.
Since then, I have painted numerous depictions of our Savior. Art print companies contacted me, and I began creating paintings with prints in mind, making my art accessible to a much wider audience. Millions of my images have since been distributed globally by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including “Jesus the Christ,” "Knocking at the Door," "The First Vision," "Mary and Martha," "Washing of the Apostles' Feet," "Jesus and Children Around the World," "Jesus and the Book of Mormon Children," and many others, paintings for temples, and paintings specifically chosen for meetinghouse foyers. Additionally, the art prints that I have published and distributed have also been found in LDS homes and meetinghouses throughout the world, in Church publications, in Church social media, and in LDS visitors’ centers.
Art has been a joy in my life, and I am eternally grateful for the Graduate program at BYU. The life experiences I have had, especially in inspirational art, would not have happened if it were not for my BYU graduate education.
Entry Description:
He Loves Us
I have always had a dream of creating a painting that truly conveys Christ's love for us, a piece that suggests He would smile upon us if we were to meet Him. I've attempted this many times, and at points, it felt like an impossible dream.
This current painting is my latest, and perhaps final effort, in bringing that vision to life. I started it six months ago, and I've wiped off the face and restarted countless times. However, this most recent attempt is getting very close to what I've always imagined. Now, when I look at the painting, it seems to whisper, "I love you."
