Illuminated Through Connection

Glass ornament showing mountains and buildings

Submitter Statement:

My experience at BYU has taught me that the light we carry is not just our own. It is a reflection of the many lights we encounter throughout our lives. Through my studies and performances abroad I have come to understand that each person I meet increases my own light, helping to shape who I become.

This piece reflects that journey through my time at BYU. The oranges represent my time spent in Florida during the pandemic and symbolize those whose joy has lifted me during my dark times. The mosque-cathedral arches from Cordova remind me of my friends from other faith traditions who have helped me live my own beliefs more deeply. The mountains of my Utah home show where I started my journey and reflect the heights I’m longing to reach, always sustained by my loved ones at home. The poppies I fondly remember from England honor those who are guiding me from beyond the grave. The water lily represents those I’ve connected with through music, singing around the globe. My favorite symbol is the Latvian church from Riga which represents both my eternal companion, whom I met through our Russian language program abroad, and the friends I’ve made learning new languages around the world. Lastly, the baobabs represent my mentors with their wisdom and strength, along with those who I have yet to meet.

From Utah to Florida, Spain, the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Latvia, and China, I’ve been blessed to connect with people around the world. BYU has given me the foundation to continue learning languages, embracing cultures, and serving others. I hope to spend my life with my companion serving God’s children, wherever he sends us while ultimately learning to better reflect the Light of our Savior Jesus Christ.

Entry Description

This piece is a stained-glass panel approximately 20 inches by 10 inches, created using hand-cut glass pieces joined with copper tape and a lead-tin solder. It is finished with black patina and sealed with wax.

Each symbol and image in the piece was chosen with care to represent individuals and communities that have shaped my life. I hope that all who view this work will reflect on those who have entered their lives, whether for a moment or a lifetime, and the lasting impact they’ve made. From the smallest flower to the greatest mountain, the people we meet leave impressions of all sizes.

This piece highlights connection and the sacred light we share with and receive from others throughout our lives in all corners of the world.
