    Admission Requirements
Admission to the program will be on a competitive basis. As a minimum applicants must have:

    1. A declared primary or secondary major in a world language with no more than four classes remaining in their language major (contact Faculty Coordinator if you believe an exception needs to be made)
    2. Advanced Mid or higher proficiency in at least 2 of the four skill modalities of listening, speaking, reading, and writing as documented by ACTFL proficiency test results.
    3. A minor, major, or demonstrated competence in another field of expertise.

The Admission Process: Admission to the program is a two-phase process:

    1. During their junior year, students apply for provisional acceptance into the MAPL program through the BYU Center for Language Studies (visit mapl.byu.edu for application requirements). Those accepted enroll in the first year MAPL courses for the subsequent fall semester.
    2. By February 1st of their senior year (at the beginning of the 2nd semester in the MAPL program) those students who were provisionally accepted into the MAPL program apply for formal admission to the graduate program through BYU Graduate Studies. More information on graduate school application requirements will be communicated to current MAPL students during their first semester.
    Program Requirements
The Master of Arts Degree in Professional Language (MAPL) is an integrated five-year program that awards both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree to students who successfully complete the program. Students must complete:
    1. the program’s tailored BYU-Provo on-campus courses,
    2. direct enrollment at an overseas university, and
    3. an internship in the target language.

NOTE: Because MAPL is an integrated program, enrollees receive both their bachelor’s (BA) and master’s (MA) degrees concurrently when they complete the entire program. You must be a current BYU undergraduate student to be considered for this program.

NOTE: Currently, Chinese is the only available language. Other languages will be added in subsequent years. See mapl.byu.edu for additional information.

    Program Outcomes
The central goals of the program are to help students:

    1. Acquire the general language and cultural skills needed to attain ACTFL Superior-level proficiency in a second language.
    2. Develop professional-level language competence in a vocational or academic specialty domain that would have application in real-world settings.

    Program Requirements:

Students take 500-level undergraduate courses their first year that apply both toward their undergraduate language major and the MAPL program. Students then apply to Graduate Studies and if accepted, take 600-level graduate courses their second year. Most of the graduate-level courses are completed abroad.
