Students can specialize in Earth Science Education, Environmental Geology, or Geology. The M.S. program typically takes two years to complete for full-time students without prior deficiencies. The M.S. degree aims to give students a strong foundation in theoretical and applied geology and extensive research experience.

BYU's Master's in Geology is a top choice for students seeking a rigorous academic experience, world-class research opportunities, and outstanding post-graduate career prospects. Students can work closely with experts in their field, thanks to a diverse graduate faculty of 10 members specializing in petrology, petroleum geology, stratigraphy, paleontology, and structure/tectonics. Our students conduct research locally and globally, including in Southeast Asia, South America, Switzerland, Alaska, and the Middle East.

Our graduate students receive rigorous academic training, and the department has an established academic reputation, leading to excellent post-graduation opportunities. Many graduates pursue Ph.D. programs at some of the nation's most prestigious institutions.
